Feeling Fine? Torrance Residents Can Still Have Prediabetes

A blood test can uncover changes that symptoms may never announce.

Prediabetes can be present for years without clear symptoms. Feeling energetic, staying busy, or having no noticeable complaints does not reliably tell you whether your blood sugar is in a healthy range.

Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but below the threshold for diabetes. It raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, although progression is not inevitable. Identifying it gives you and your healthcare team an opportunity to act.

Ask what your numbers mean

One commonly used blood test is A1C, which estimates average blood sugar over roughly the previous three months. An A1C between 5.7% and 6.4% falls in the prediabetes range.

The A1C test itself does not require fasting, although other tests ordered at the same visit might. Ask the office for preparation instructions rather than assuming you should skip breakfast.

Your clinician should interpret the result alongside your history. Certain conditions, including some blood disorders and severe anemia, can affect A1C accuracy. Other blood tests may be appropriate, and your care team can explain whether confirmation or follow-up testing is needed.

Family history, physical inactivity, excess weight, and a history of gestational diabetes are among the reasons to discuss screening. Ask when you were last tested and whether your current risk warrants another check.

Build a plan you can sustain

Healthy eating, regular activity, and weight management when appropriate can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Start by asking which changes would make the most sense for your health, abilities, and daily routine.

A manageable plan might include scheduling walks, replacing sugary drinks, or working with a registered dietitian. You do not need to design the entire plan alone.

Torrance Memorial’s Outpatient Diabetes Education Center provides personalized self-management education and support for people with diabetes. Residents with prediabetes can call to ask which services or prevention resources fit their situation, including any referral or coverage requirements.
