You Don’t Have to Sew to Help Torrance’s Comfort-Quilt Makers |
The South Bay Quilters Guild has useful jobs beyond the sewing machine, with a November 10 work session on its calendar. |

A sewing machine is not the only way into the South Bay Quilters Guild’s comfort-quilt project. Its volunteer calendar lists tasks such as pinning, trimming and turning quilts, alongside machine sewing. For someone who has admired handmade quilts without knowing how to make one, that is an inviting place to begin. The guild’s November calendar lists a comfort-quilt work session on Tuesday, November 10. Its project page gives the usual meeting location as Levy Adult Center, Room 3, at 3420 W. 229th Place in Torrance, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Advance signup is required; contact the organizer to confirm a place and the arrangements before attending. Many small jobs become one useful gift The guild describes a process that divides quilt-making into manageable stages. Its finished lap quilts go to people of different ages in settings including hospitals, elder-care facilities, foster care and shelters. Volunteers can also inquire about work taken home, rather than assume the evening session is the only option. What makes this worth a closer look is the clear connection between a small task and a finished object. A newcomer need not arrive claiming to be an expert. An honest description of your experience gives an organizer something useful to work with. Start with a conversation Our suggestion is to send a short email explaining the time you can offer and whether you have sewn before. Ask which tasks currently need help, what supplies to bring and whether a first visit is suitable for your abilities. If an evening meeting is difficult, ask about another way to participate. This is also a thoughtful possibility for friends who want to do something together beyond meeting for coffee. Check arrangements individually rather than arriving as an unannounced group. The first contribution may be modest, but it can be specific: a few hours, a task you can manage and one less unfinished step for the next volunteer.
