Before Replacing an Appliance, Check Which SCE Help Is Still Open

Standard Energy Savings Assistance remains available, even as two related programs stop taking new applications.

Southern California Edison’s standard Energy Savings Assistance program still accepts applications from qualifying households. That matters because two related offerings have closed to new participants. For Torrance residents considering an appliance replacement, the first question is which program applies, not simply whether an advertisement says energy assistance is available.

SCE says its Building Electrification Program stopped accepting new enrollment in September 2026. The separate ESA Whole Home pilot is also closed to new project applications ahead of its scheduled end-of-2026 sunset. Those notices should not be read as the end of the standard ESA program.

What the standard program can offer

The California Public Utilities Commission describes ESA as income-qualified assistance for energy-saving improvements. Examples include weatherstripping, insulation and efficient appliances. Its current income table, effective June 1, 2026, through May 31, 2027, lists annual household limits of $39,900 for one person, $54,100 for two and $82,500 for four. Check the current table for your household size.

SCE’s help center says both homeowners and renters may qualify. Some work can require a copayment, and rental properties may need written permission from the owner. An assessment determines appropriate services; qualifying does not mean a household can select any appliance it wants. Availability also depends on program restrictions and funding.

Questions worth asking before you buy

Our recommendation is to write down the appliance or home problem you want to address before contacting the program. Ask whether it can be evaluated, which documents are needed, whether owner permission applies and whether there could be a charge. Request a clear explanation of the next step before making plans around assistance.

SCE’s help center also says work must be performed by approved contractors; it does not reimburse customers for doing the work themselves. Check before making a purchase or starting an installation on the assumption that assistance will pay you back.

If you already have a Whole Home pilot project underway, ask your program representative about its specific status. Do not assume another household’s experience or a general closure notice answers what will happen to yours.

For standard ESA information, start with SCE’s current program page or call its energy-efficiency team at 800-736-4777, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Checking first can help you make a better-informed replacement decision without counting on an unapproved benefit.

Contact: SCE Energy Efficiency: 800-736-4777, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.; application access through the official program page.
