If You Are the Family Caregiver, Put Help on the Calendar

A specific request and a local support connection can be more useful than another reminder to take care of yourself.

If you regularly help a relative or friend manage daily life, you may be a caregiver even if you have never used that word. Arranging appointments, handling meals and coordinating assistance all take time. Caring about someone does not make the workload disappear, and needing help is not a measure of your devotion.

MedlinePlus describes caregiver stress as both emotional and physical. Feeling overwhelmed or isolated, losing interest in activities and becoming unusually irritable can be warning signs. It recommends accepting help, looking into community resources and keeping up your own medical care, rather than treating your health as something to address after everyone else is settled.

Make the request small enough to answer

Our suggestion: write down three tasks someone else could reasonably take on. Be concrete. A grocery pickup on Thursday, a prepared dinner or making several routine phone calls is easier to discuss than an open-ended request to help more. Let the person choose something they can actually commit to.

Agree on a day and a clear handoff. If the task involves staying with someone who needs supervision or personal care, discuss the person’s needs and the helper’s abilities first. A willing friend is not automatically prepared for every caregiving responsibility. Ask the care team about appropriate respite options when more support is needed.

A local place to start

Torrance Memorial lists a Caregiver Support Group that meets through Zoom on the second Wednesday of the month. Its published resource page directs caregivers to email torrancememorialhealtheducation@tmmc.com for a caregiver packet and call 310-517-4711 for meeting dates and times. Confirm the next session and registration details before arranging your schedule around it.

The hospital also describes education and resources for people caring for loved ones with dementia. You do not need to solve every question before asking which support is appropriate for your situation.

This week’s manageable goal could be one accepted offer of help and one resource call. The point is not to add another assignment to a crowded day. It is to find something that can come off your list.

What is a useful, specific offer of everyday help someone can make to a caregiver, beyond “let me know if you need anything”?
