The wait is over for one of Del Amo Fashion Center’s more unusual new food arrivals.

Onigilly Japanese Kitchen celebrated the grand opening of its Torrance location over Labor Day weekend in the mall’s Outdoor Village. The restaurant specializes in onigiri—Japanese rice balls wrapped in seaweed and filled with savory ingredients—designed as an easy handheld meal or snack.

And there are a lot more choices than the simple rice-and-seaweed description might suggest.

Onigilly’s current menu includes fillings such as teriyaki chicken, Spam, spicy Spam, miso tuna salad, shiitake mushroom, tofu, eggplant, pickled plum, baked salmon, unagi, snow crab and several poke-style tuna and salmon combinations.

You can order them individually or turn them into a meal with edamame, miso soup or a bento set that adds chicken karaage, tamagoyaki and pickled radish. The menu also includes customizable bowls, Japanese side dishes and drinks such as matcha, strawberry and yuzu lemonade.

The new Torrance shop is located at 3525 W. Carson Street, Suite 80, on the Main Level of Del Amo’s Outdoor Village. Onigilly’s ordering system now lists the Torrance location alongside its Northern California restaurants.

For Torrance diners, this is one of those openings that gives the mall something noticeably different from another burger, pizza or chicken concept.

Sometimes lunch really can fit in the palm of your hand.
