Northwood Space’s new Torrance headquarters and factory represents a major expansion of local aerospace manufacturing: a 185,000-square-foot facility and a company plan to add 400 jobs over three years.

The opening was announced August 31. Its relevance this month is the production move scheduled for October, a milestone that should be distinguished from confirmation that every line is already operating.

The space business happening on Earth

Northwood builds ground infrastructure that connects satellites with operators and customers. Its work addresses a less visible part of the space economy: getting commands into orbit and bringing useful data back.

In its June product announcement, the company described a shared network combining antennas and software. The idea is to let customers use common infrastructure rather than build a separate ground network for each mission.

Why the Torrance expansion matters

The new building increases Northwood’s manufacturing area from 25,000 to 135,000 square feet, according to its expansion announcement. The larger 185,000-square-foot figure describes the overall headquarters and factory.

Inside, Northwood plans dedicated production for its Portal phased-array systems and Prism dish antennas, alongside circuit-board assembly, machining, and testing.

The company says bringing more work under one roof will help it revise products and reduce supplier delays. At full production, it targets four Prism antennas weekly and more than a ground site’s worth of Portal panels monthly.

Those are planned production rates, not verified current output.

What the jobs announcement means

The planned 400 positions are a multiyear hiring goal. They should not be read as 400 vacancies available today or 400 workers already hired.

For Torrance, the expansion points to opportunities spanning the work required to design, manufacture, assemble, and test communications hardware. Job seekers should check individual openings for qualifications and location.

The next useful benchmarks are confirmation of the production move, evidence of manufacturing output, and hiring progress. Together, those will show how the announced expansion translates into an operating factory and local employment.
