Torrance’s Toyota Meeting Hall will host the World Uchinānchu Day Mini Expo on Friday, October 30, from 5 to 9 p.m. Presented by the Okinawa Association of America, the event invites visitors to explore Okinawan culture through workshops, performances, stories, and food samples. General admission is listed at $25. The venue is at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, 3330 Civic Center Drive. An evening you can participate in The announced workshops cover Okinawa-style Bon dance, the sanshin musical instrument, and Uchinaaguchi, the Okinawan language. Performances include traditional music and dance, Isshin-ryū karate, and Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Los Angeles. That combination makes this more than a seated concert. Our suggestion is to choose one unfamiliar activity and give it your attention: listen to the instrument, try a workshop, or ask about a tradition’s meaning. Booths will feature local creatives and people who have participated in Okinawa-supported study programs. Printed games for children and displays about visiting the islands are also advertised. Why October 30 matters World Uchinānchu Day was established in 2016 to honor Okinawan emigrants and connect the communities they built around the world. This year marks its tenth anniversary. The Torrance gathering is also part of the association’s Road to Taikai campaign leading toward the worldwide Okinawan gathering in 2027. For visitors without Okinawan roots, the organizers’ message is welcoming: come to learn and take part. Tickets and food details Admission includes limited food tasting. A separate food truck will sell meals; those purchases are not included in the expo ticket. The ticket page says guests receive a wristband permitting re-entry. Eligible current OAA members purchasing through Zeffy can receive a $5 reimbursement under the posted conditions. Check the organizer’s program before choosing an arrival time, especially if a particular workshop interests you. Contact OAA at 310-532-1929 with questions. For a Friday evening built around discovery, this offers several ways into a culture through sound, movement, language, and conversation.
