A very different kind of Torrance Unified school is opening this month.

Torrance Meridian Academy is a tuition-free TUSD charter school for students in grades 5–8, co-designed with online education provider Sora Schools. Instead of a traditional six-hour campus day, students participate in live virtual classes with teachers for about 3½ hours a day, four days a week, with a curriculum built around interdisciplinary, real-world projects. Fridays are reserved for enrichment activities and optional in-person opportunities.

The school is open to eligible students across Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Kern and San Bernardino counties, not just Torrance residents. Plans call for adding grades 9–12 beginning in 2027.

For Torrance families, the opening adds an unusual new choice inside the public-school system: a model that combines district oversight with the flexibility of online learning while still emphasizing teachers, small classes and projects.
