A hot day may make Torrance Beach tempting this week, but beachgoers have two separate safety warnings to keep in mind.

Los Angeles County Public Health is currently advising people to avoid swimming, surfing and playing in the ocean at Torrance Beach near Malaga Cove, specifically within 100 yards up and down the coast from the lifeguard tower north of RAT Tower.

Recent water samples showed bacteria levels exceeding state health standards, which can increase the risk of illness.

At the same time, the National Weather Service has issued High Surf and Coastal Flood advisories through 11 p.m. Tuesday for Los Angeles County beaches, including Torrance. Waves of 5 to 8 feet with local sets reaching 12 feet are possible, along with dangerous rip currents and moderate coastal flooding.

The National Weather Service advises people to stay out of dangerous surf, remain near occupied lifeguard towers if entering the water and stay off rocks and jetties.

Beach conditions can change as new samples and forecasts arrive, so check before heading into the water.
